Overview

Compressed gas cylinders are potentially hazardous when not used properly or abused and they can contribute to various hazards due to their pressure and contents.

Compressed gas and their cylinders provide a potential for exposure to both mechanical and chemical hazards. Typical gases that are stored in compressed gas cylinders are:

• Acidic

• Combustible

• Corrosive

• Explosive

• Flammable

• Inert

• Poisonous

• Reactive

or they can be a combination of all of these hazards

Proper care and use of compressed gas cylinders can avoid explosions that can kill workers and destroy facilities and equipment. Gas that is released when cylinder valves are damaged or broken off can become projectiles flying through the air and causing serious injury or death. Precautions must be taken to protect employees, equipment, and facilities.

Procedures are required for handling various compressed gases, cylinders, regulators or valves that are used to control gas flow, and any piping that confines gases when they are flowing.
